Works-in-Progress

The following are a few of the paintings I’m working on for the upcoming show.

To me, there is a special fascination with seeing an unfinished work of art. The way it offers a telling glimpse into an artist’s process and how it makes you wonder where it will end up.

Below are progress shots of what I’m working on for the LOST IN TRANSLATION series… It makes me a bit uncomfortable because during my process there are often awkward stages where it’s clear I’m still trying to figure it out and certain things just aren’t working. Kind of like assembling IKEA furniture, but boy what a rush when you finally get it put together.

I’m updating the progress of each painting every few weeks or so.

WORKING TITLE

All That Is Gained And Left Behind In The In-Between Place

SIZE

60″ x 60″

NOTES

Wicker chair getting a lot of attention…Sticking with the pinks, trying to capture either morning or afternoon light. The drawing on the opening of the suitcase in the lower left is based on an intricate ancient Asian watercolor of a fishing scene . Will be super detailed and cool.

WORKING TITLE

The Best Part Of You The World Has Never Seen

SIZE

60″ x 84″

NOTES

May be the closest I’ll ever get to capturing true beauty. All of the elements are in place but still a lot of work left to do with details and lighting.

WORKING TITLE

An emerging resolve to stop reading the instructions

SIZE

46″ x 72″

NOTES

This was originally a very elaborate painting with a camel as the central focus. Thankfully, not all of my pieces encounter this level of evolution and repainting.

WORKING TITLE

The Referent, the Refraction and a creature of insubstantiality.

SIZE

46″ x 52″

NOTES

If you watch the animation of progress photos, you’ll see that I recently made a major shift. I hated to give up the wicker chair but it had to go, it wanted too much attention and the composition is better now.

The Karma Collectors of Early Morning Bombay

NOTES

A goal of this painting was to capture an enchanting time of day to me… early morning. I call the hours that come before 7am the magic hours. Everything is new again.
